"What if I'm just broken?"
On Valentine's Day 1994, Tony Stark met a young woman named Carly at a party. Pretty and intoxicated, she was exactly his type. On the 10th of December of that very same year, Raven Antonia Reyes was born.
Carly knew that she was nothing more than a fling for Tony, so she decided not to tell him about their daughter. During the first few years, she handled the life of a single mother decently. However, when Raven was four years old, Carly lost her job, and it all spiraled downwards from that point on. They had to give up their nice apartment in a stable neighborhood and leave behind everyone and everything they knew. Carly started getting drunk on a regular basis, while Raven essentially figured out how to raise herself.
After years of struggling to keep their heads over water, Carly couldn't take it anymore. In July 2005, she died of alcohol poisoning. She left Raven with the advice to go to Tony so he could help her, but when the police asked her if she had any family left, she said no. Carly had told her many times that the famous Tony Stark was her father, but since she was rarely sober during her rants, Raven didn't believe her. A part of her wanted to, but she didn't allow herself to have hope.
Raven spent the rest of her childhood at an orphanage, except for a few months she spent on the streets after running away. The police brought her back every time she fled, but she still kept on trying, considering it a weird little vacation where she could do what she wanted.
In April 2008, a new kid moved into the orphanage, and for the first time in years, Raven had a friend. The boy's name was Finn, and he was only a few months younger than Raven. Even though she tried to shut him out, Finn's kindness and support eventually earned her trust. By the time Tony told the world that he was Iron Man, Raven and Finn were best friends, and he knew about her mother's claims. He regularly took her to visit Stark Industries, even though these little trips were against the rules of the orphanage. He hoped that, one day, Raven would find the hope and courage to approach Tony and find out if Carly told her the truth.
Almost two years after they first met, Raven and Finn became a couple. Although it scared her, she dared to hope that he could keep his promises, and they could count on each other for the rest of their days. For a while, it seemed like it might work out. They were together for well over a year when Raven realized that something was off. Finn had developed feelings for another girl, but he stayed with Raven because they'd been each other's whole world for such a long time. He didn't want to lose her, and he didn't want to disappoint her. While Raven understood that, she ended their relationship, drawing the conclusion that they took things in the wrong direction. They were friends, and they would always be family, but they just weren't meant to be together. Despite that, it still hurt her to see him with his new girlfriend the following months, but eventually, things more or less returned to the status quo between them.
In 2012, when the Chitauri attacked NYC, Raven and Finn were roaming the streets together. Like so many people, they were caught off guard by the invasion. They tried to run and hide, but in the end, it wasn't enough. Finn was killed while shielding Raven from falling debris, marking the second great loss of her young life.
Following that tragic event, Raven buried herself in her studies, determined to latch onto her career goals rather than another person. In 2016, she became the assistant of Jacapo Sinclair, an engineer employed by the NASA. Despite her background, he was willing to take a chance on her, and chose her to accompany him on multiple minor missions in the Earth's orbit.
Raven and Sinclair were on one of these missions when half of all life in the universe faded to dust. They heard a scream through the comms, and seconds later, Raven watched as her mentor just disappeared beside her.
